J. W. Dork and Sons Cornet Repair

This summer I picked up a great little shepard's crook style cornet. It was originally silver plated and very well used. The Brand is J. W. York and Sons, but the fanciful script makes it more resemble J. W. Dork and Sons, and I rather prefer that name, cuz it's funny. The horn came with a Bb crook and a C crook as well as a few shanks I haven't fully figured out yet. The C crook had a crack running down it's length starting at the mouthpiece end. I filled the crack with 63/47 solder with the help a precision temperature control heatgun. The heatgun is meant for soldering on pcbs and surface mount components, but it worked great on the crook. Having tried soldering with a blowtorch in the traditional way in the past, I am confident in saying the heatgun is far superior even for brass instruments.
